Windar will manufacture a total of 21 transition pieces at its Avilés facilities.
The project will begin in November 2023 and conclude in the summer of 2025. It is expected to receive secondary structure manufacturing support from other Spanish suppliers.
The pieces will be integrated at the Spanish port of Avilés, then shipped to Germany.
Each of the transition pieces will be 17m in length and 8m in diameter, and will weigh 400 tonnes.
Windar believes the contract can help it become a global leader in the manufacture of offshore structures.
It has previously secured contracts from the Spanish energy giant for offshore wind farms in the UK, Germany, France and the US.
Windar executive-president Orlando Alonso stated: “Iberdrola’s new order demonstrates the high quality of our products and the reliability of our processes. It also confirms our forecasts of strong activity growth in the sector, for which Windar Renovables is reinforcing its corporate structure and is working to increase its capacities to respond to this challenge and continue to deserve the trust of such important customers.”
The 300MW Windanker offshore wind farm is being developed by Iberdrola in the German waters of the Baltic Sea. It will be powered by turbines with a unit capacity of 15MW.
The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in 2026 with an investment of €800m ($879.27m). It will join the Wikinger wind farm with its 350MW capacity and the Baltic Eagle with 476MW.
The clean electricity generated from the project will be sold through long-term power purchase agreements on the German market.
