Construction of the facility began in June 2016. It is claimed to be one of the cleanest natural gas-powered stations in the country with its air permit having “the strictest CO2 limits”.

The new power station in Virginia, which is claimed to be the largest power block of its kind in the world, makes use of three combustion turbines to generate power, as well as steam that assists in producing even more power.

Dominion Energy’s Generation Group CEO Paul Koonce said: “Greensville is a much-welcomed addition to our Virginia service area.

“It will be a workhorse, running around the clock to provide our customers reliable, low-cost energy. It will also complement and support our growing solar fleet.”

This is Dominion Energy’s second large investment in Southside following the opening of its $1.1bn, 1,360MW Brunswick County Power Station.

The two power plants are currently served by a natural gas pipeline, but these will be linked to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline following its completion to improve reliability.

During its first year of operation, the power plant is expected to contribute up to $7m in property taxes for Greensville County.

During the peak construction period, more than 1,800 workers were employed at the site. Once completed it will have 49 full-time employees.

Greensville County board of supervisors chair Michael Ferguson said: “The Greensville plant will generate reliable energy for Virginia homes and businesses while bolstering job creation and revenue for Greensville County. We look forward to a continued long and successful partnership with Dominion Energy.”

As the company will not be compelled to buy power from market sources following the operation of Greensville County plant, customers of Dominion Energy in this region are expected to save about $2.1bn.

Dominion Energy provides power to nearly six million customers in 19 US states.
