Description

The Schwerin-WEMAG Younicos – Battery Energy Storage System 1 was developed by Younicos. The project is owned by Wemag (100%).

The key applications of the project are frequency regulation, voltage support and black start.

Contractors involved

Samsung SDI, Wemag and Younicos have delivered the battery energy storage project.

Additional information

Associated Power Source: 110kV substation in Schwerin-Lankow.
The project was funded by Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) – Environmental Innovation Program (Umweltinnovationsprogramm) with $1,700,000 and WEMAG AG.
In 2013/14 Younicos built Schwerin 1, a 5 MW/5 MWh battery power plant. Located in the Schwerin district of Lankow, the battery park is housed in a hall the size of a school gym. Inside, 1,600 battery “trays” contain 25,600 lithium-manganese-oxide cells that can store and release energy within milliseconds. Five mediumvoltage transformers connect the units to the grid and boost the current from 480 volts to 20kV and back down as needed.
In 2016 WEMAG decided to enlarge their battery park and build Schwerin 2. With this upgrade, the utility’s storage resource will triple its power output from 5 MW to 15 MW, and the energy capacity from 5 MWh to 15 MWh over the course of 2017. Additional 1,254 modules or 27,588 cells will be.
