SAINT-LAURENT, QUEBEC, CANADA, December 15, 2005 – L-3 Communications MAPPS, a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications, announced today that it has been selected by the final customer (CNPEC) of Framatome ANP, AREVA’s joint subsidiary with Siemens, to supply a full-scale simulator for China’s Ling Ao Phase II nuclear power station. The new site is an ongoing extension that will add two more generating units to the existing four units at the Ling Ao/Daya Bay site in Guangdong Province. The reference plant for the Ling Ao Phase II simulator is made up of two 1,000-megawatt (MW) three-loop Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs), whose design is being coordinated by China Nuclear Power Engineering Company and is expected to become one of China’s standard plants for 1,000 MW class nuclear power plants. The simulator design starts immediately and the simulator is targeted to be in service in the summer of 2009.

AREVA is providing technical assistance for the two new nuclear islands and is also contracted to supply the primary circuits (through a consortium with Dongfeng Electric Corporation (DEC) – a Chinese company) and instrumentation and control (I&C) systems (in consortium with Siemens) for the two units. The control systems to be deployed are AREVA’s Teleperm XS for the safety systems and Siemens’ Teleperm XP and OM690 for the non-safety systems and the Main Control Room. The simulator order is an AREVA subcontract linked to the ongoing I&C project.

The Ling Ao Phase II simulator will employ L-3 MAPPS’ proven graphical simulation PC/Windows-based tools for model development and maintenance as well as enhanced instructor station software. The models to be developed include the advanced thermal-hydraulic, reactor, balance of plant, electrical systems and certain I&C models. Both AREVA and Siemens will supply I&C equipment/software to L-3 MAPPS for the construction of the simulator.

The beneficiary of the simulator will be Ling Dong Nuclear Power Company (LDNPC). The new simulator will be located in the Daya Bay Training Center, which already houses the Ling Ao and Daya Bay simulators – the former built by L-3 MAPPS and the latter currently in the process of being modernized by L-3 MAPPS. The three plant sites and the training center are in Da Peng on the coast of Daya Bay in Guangdong Province, about 45 km from the city center of Shenzhen, and about 50 km from Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong SAR.

“The Ling Ao Phase II simulator gives us an opportunity to showcase our most current simulation technologies to our valued customers in Guangdong Province,” said Rashid Khan, president of L-3 MAPPS. “This project has double significance as we continue on this exciting journey to extend L-3 MAPPS’ reach in the all-important Chinese market, and it is the third significant project that we are carrying out for nuclear powerhouse AREVA, including the ongoing development of the world’s first EPR simulator.”

With manufacturing facilities in 40 countries and a sales network in more than 100, AREVA offers customers reliable technological solutions for CO2-free power generation and electricity transmission and distribution.
