Specialist Power Engineering Contracts (SPEC) is known to many blue-chip organisations as a complete and specialist substation support contractor to the power-generation industry, serving parties from OEMs to main contractors through to end users.
Substations, cabling, switching, and cable-fault location
The specialist services we offer and support include the supply (via OEMs) of substation installations, high-voltage (HV) cabling, substation testing and commissioning, HV switching, cable-fault location, and substation maintenance of distribution and power transformers and switchgear substations up to and including 33,000V. All these services are carried out UK-wide, as well as on offshore installations and for international organisations.
Working directly with end-users, OEMs, main contractors, sub contractors and FM providers, SPEC are capable of engineering any service to suit any situation. With three operations and live vehicle-management systems in place, national coverage and ETA are just some of the benefits of working with us.
Standard-distribution transformer and switchgear substations
Our purpose-built head office and business focal point at Wakefield, UK, was constructed in 2004 and has grown to become the hub of all our activities. Standard-distribution transformer and switchgear substations are stored, serviced and refurbished here, ready to be called upon either on a project-by-project basis or as part of the 24/7/365 callout.
HV and LV cables, joints, terminations, glands and lugs
Supporting this operation is a vast array of HV and LV cables, joints, terminations, glands, lugs etc., to enable any project or callout to be completed with the least time-disruption to the client.
This, combined with our business philosophy, enabled us to establish a southern UK operation in 2004 to support the company’s contracts and commitments in the south of the UK. With the continued growth of this satellite operation a new bespoke building was fitted out to mirror the head office’s operation. Further expansion happened in October 2009 when a new operation in Oxford, UK, was opened to further support the southern and head office operations.
ISO-certified substation support services
In our industry, quality and health and safety aspects of day-to-day activities are critical. With this in mind we have just had our current quality assurance system updated to ISO 9001:2008 from the previous ISO 9001:2001 accreditation that was gained in 2001.
Understanding and respecting the health and safety aspects of our activities, the company directors decided in 2003 to join the professional support services of Mentor, who still to this day provide the company with 24/7/365 advice, documentation, audits, support etc.
With the continued growth of the business structure, SPEC decided in 2009 to employ the direct services of an in-house SHEQ manager to ensure all mandatory requirements are met, as well developing the company’s accreditations to include ISO 14001 and converting our current Mentor health and safety structure to ISO 18000.
SPEC is proud of its reputation both nationally and internationally and continues to place emphasis on providing a high-quality service backed by a local cost-effective solution.
With a client base ranging UK-wide, offshore and overseas, SPEC has gained an exceptional reputation and amount of knowledge within its field, reflected in its substantial growth over the last nine years.
The services offered are supported by a measured-term contract maintenance package tailored to either a control-and-maintain or a maintenance-only service.
