The Parker Energy Grid Tie Division of Parker Hannifin, the global leader in motion and control technologies, is releasing a new utility-scale power conversion system (PCS) for energy storage, with grid-friendly features at this year’s Power Gen international show.
The 890GT-B Outdoor PCS is designed for utility-scale energy storage applications through 2.2MW and is a complement to the company’s earlier introduction of the 890GT-S outdoor central solar inverter, launched last year. A high-efficiency design integrates proven IGBT power conversion with Parker’s groundbreaking two-phase refrigerant cooling technology.
The Parker 890GT-B employs a unique modular design for ease of maintenance and service, featuring multiple exterior access panels making installation and scheduled maintenance safe and easy, without requiring personnel entry. Operating modes include grid parallel (current mode) and island (voltage mode). Fault ride-through logic for low voltage and grid frequency excursions ensures maximum uptime. Slew rate control for both real and reactive power make the 890GT-B grid-friendly, and combined with high-speed of response, makes it suitable for frequency regulation, ramp rate control, renewables capacity firming, voltage support and more.
Output power is handled by easily replaceable phase modules. Each module contains power semiconductors, long life film capacitors, and gate drive circuitry. The modules can be replaced in under 15min. Cooling and AC power connections are quick-disconnect type, with connections made as module is installed. Capacitors are easily accessible, and refrigerant cooled output filters utilize a modular tray design for easy maintenance.
The 890GT-B monitors more than 100 internal heat seeking sensors strategically placed on busbars and power components and reports any anomalies to its central monitoring system. Combined with data logging and high speed communications over a choice of SCADA network formats, the 890GT-B offers an unparalleled level of condition monitoring. With IP65 rated enclosure, operating temperature up to 55°C (131°F) and refrigerant pump redundancy, the 890GT-B can be used in the harshest of environments.
