The company secured the contract for the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the high voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system in May 2019.
The cable system includes two 220kV three-core cables along with extruded cross-linked polyethylene insulation. It will transmit the power generated from the wind farm to the mainland power grid.
Prysmian manufactured 134km of submarine power cables at its facilities in Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy.
The cable installation work was conducted by the company’s Cable Enterprise and Ulisse cable-laying vessels.

“Thanks to our investment in a new cable plant at Brayton Point, Massachusetts, we are committed to reinforcing our footprint in the US, supporting the growing offshore wind market.”
To be located 15 miles (24km) offshore Martha’s Vineyard, the Vineyard Wind 1 project features 62 wind turbines and will generate enough clean energy for 400,000 households every year in Massachusetts.
Offshore construction on the project began in 2022 and the offshore substation was installed in July 2023.
