Siemens has finished setting up the grid connection for the 800MW BorWin 2 offshore wind project in the German North Sea.

The project was delivered to German-Dutch transmission grid operator TenneT following the successful test runs carried out by Siemens.

The wind farm is located approximately 100km off the German coast in the north-west side of the Borkum island.

TenneT TSO managing board member Lex Hartman said: "The BorWin2 link is a major contribution to the energy transition.

"The connection’s capacity of 800MW is equivalent to the capacity required for supplying one million private households."

Global Tech 1 wind farm is connected to the BorWin2 project. However, 50% of this projects grid capacity has been reserved for linking to another wind farm.

"The BorWin2 link is a major contribution to the energy transition."

TenneT had awarded the contract for the offshore grid connection to a consortium of Siemens and Prysmian in 2010.

High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) technology has been implemented for the connection. It has been deployed both for offshore platform and in the land-based converter station in Diele, East Frisia, to bring the wind-generated energy to land.

Apart from the BorWin 2 wind farm, Siemens is also responsible for four more grid connection set ups for TenneT in the North Sea.

Project works for 864MW Sylwin 1, 576MW HelWin 1, and 690MW HelWin 2 are nearly completed, with the projects expected to be operational within the first half of the year.

The 900MW BorWin 3 project is the fourth in line, and is expected to start commercial operations from 2019.

Along with BorWin 2, the five TenneT grid connections will have a combined transmission capacity of more than 3.8GW, which will be enough to power five million homes.
