Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has signed an agreement to build the 100MW Assela wind farm. Ethiopia’s state-owned electricity company Ethiopian Electric Power will operate the facility, commissioned from 2023.

Located between the towns of Adama and Assela, the wind farm will lie nearly 150km south of the capital. As per the terms of the agreement, SGRE will supply its 29 SG3.4-132 wind turbines and provide full engineering, procurement, and turnkey construction services.

The wind farm will generate approximately 300,000MWh per year, powering more than 400,000 households in Ethiopia. This will offset more than 260,000t of carbon emissions annually.

Siemens Gamesa Southern Europe and Africa Onshore CEO Roberto Sabalza said: “Siemens Gamesa is intent on expanding its leadership across Africa, and in turn help a growing transition to green energy across the continent.

“So, we are extremely pleased to begin work in Ethiopia and look forward to collaborating with both Ethiopian Electric Power and the country to continue to promote their drive to install more renewables and meet transformational energy targets.”

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Danida Business Finance will finance the Assela wind project. A loan agreement signed between the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation (MoFEC) and Danske Bank will also provide funds.

Ethiopia aims to supply 100% of its domestic energy demand through renewable energy by 2030.

In November last year, SGRE secured a contract from Berkshire Hathaway Energy Canada for its 130MW Rattlesnake Ridge wind power project.
