Hitachi ABB Power Grids has secured contracts from EDF Renewables to build three 110/20kV power substations in Poland.

The substations will be installed at EDF Renewables’ three new wind power facilities. These are the 28MW Ustka project, the 15MW Parnowo project, and the 24MW Gorzyca project, under construction in Northern and Western Poland.

Additionally, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will be responsible for delivering a 110kV substation in Parnowo, which will be used by the distribution system operator.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids Poland Management Board vice-president and marketing & sales manager Hubert Krukowski said: “What is important is that we have managed to optimize the original project in order to reduce the cost of its implementation while maintaining high functionality.

“These are the next in a series of projects that we are implementing in Poland for the EDF Group – our systems and apparatus have been working well for several years in another wind farm built by EDF. The customer can be confident that they have appointed an experienced contractor that understands their needs.”

A company spokesperson said the substations will use high voltage circuit breakers, current and voltage instrument transformers and surge arresters.

It further added that the power substation would serve as the ‘brain’ of the wind farms, and has been designed to off-take and transform generated energy to grid level output.

EDF Renewables will commission the three investments next year.

In July this year, ABB sold 80.1% of its Power Grids business. Japanese company Hitachi has paid $6.85bn for ABB’s former stake.
