Siemens has won a contract from MidAmerican Energy to provide wind turbines totalling 1,050MW capacity to be erected in five power projects in Iowa, the US.

Under the contract, which is claimed to be the world’ largest single order for onshore wind power to date, Siemens will supply the 448 x SWT-2.3-108 wind turbines, each with a nominal rating of 2.3MW and a rotor diameter of 108m, and will also be responsible for their service and maintenance.

Siemens will assemble the nacelles and hubs for the wind turbines at its plant in Hutchinson, Kansas, while its Fort Madison, Iowa, facility will manufacture all the rotor blades.

Siemens Energy Wind Power Division CEO Markus Tacke said the company is not only a leading global player in the offshore wind market, but also a successful player in the onshore wind industry too.

“In Europe and Africa alone, we successfully installed more than 1GW in the last fiscal year. This new order from MidAmerican Energy once again highlights that we are one of the leading suppliers in the US wind power market,” said Tacke.

MidAmerican Energy’s five projects include 500MW Highland wind project in O’Brien County; 250MW Lundgren wind project in Webster County; 138.6MW Wellsburg wind project in Grundy County; 117MW Macksburg wind project located in Madison County and 44MW Vienna II wind project expansion in Marshall County.

MidAmerican Energy has reached agreements with Invenergy Wind to acquire the Highland wind project site; with EDF Renewable Energy to acquire Lundgren wind project site; and with two RPM Access companies to buy the Wellsburg wind project site and Macksburg wind project site.

Additionally, the company is expanding its existing Vienna wind farm, built in 2012, by 44.6MW in Marshall County (Vienna II wind project).

Mortenson Construction will construct the Highland, Macksburg and Wellsburg wind projects, while Wanzek Construction will build the Lundgren and Vienna II wind projects.

Once operational by the end of 2015, the under-construction projects are estimated to generate enough electricity to power around 317,000 average Iowa households.
