The Covid-19 pandemic caused gas demand for thermopower generation in Brazil to decline to an average of 15Mm³/d (million cubic meters per day) in the first half of 2020. Between 2016 and 2019, the annual average stood at 20Mm³/d, bnamericas.com reported citing data published by the energy ministry.
A $1.5bn project to expand the production capacity of Hwange Power Station in Zimbabwe has fallen behind targets because of the coronavirus pandemic. Developers completed 48% of work by the end of the June, against a target of 57%. Chinese firm Sinohydro will install two power generators with a combined output of 600MW.
More than 2.5GW of new offshore wind capacity was added across the globe during the first half of this year despite the ongoing pandemic, World Forum Offshore Wind said in its latest report. The report added that ten new offshore wind farms commenced operations during the period, across the UK, China, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, and the US.
Italian energy giant Eni has teamed up with Falck Renewables to acquire 62MW of operating wind and solar projects and nearly 160MW wind development pipeline in the US. The partners operated through Novis Renewables, in which Eni owns 49% and Falck 51%. The companies have agreed to buy Italian energy firm Building Energy’s US unit Building Energy Holdings for $32.5m.
