wpd secures grid connections for 700MW Swedish wind farms

The two wind farms will generate 1.5 terawatt-hours of clean energy.

German renewable energy developer wpd has signed a grid connection agreement with Ellevio, a Swedish electric distribution company, for two wind farms in Sweden – Broboberget and Lannaberget – with a total capacity of 700MW.

The two are expected to generate 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy annually.

The power will be connected to the Swedish grid through a new 400kV transformer station.

The wind farms will built in the municipalities of Rättvik, in Dalarna province, and Ovanåker in Gävleborg. The Broboberget wind farm will feature 80 wind turbines and Lannaberget will have 35.

wpd’s subsidiary, wpd Scandinavia, plans to invest Skr4bn ($364.9m) in the first stage of the wind farms’ development.

Commenting on the development, wpd Scandinavia managing director Johanna Bohn stated: “We have driven the project forward with all the commitment and know-how of our experienced team and are pleased that we have mastered the next stage towards construction and commissioning of the project.”

Sweden aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity generation by 2040. To reach this target and meet the increasing electricity demand, the country must generate 100TWh of electricity from renewable resources.

The new wind farms will help to meet the country’s increasing demand for renewable power generation. Their hilly locations offer good wind conditions.

wpd is currently developing a detailed project plan and negotiating with turbine suppliers.

The first phase of grid connection is scheduled for 2027.
