German energy company Uniper has partnered with Polish project developer WAP Energia to develop an onshore wind power portfolio in Poland, aiming for a combined capacity of 600MW.

The collaboration involves the development of six early-stage onshore wind power projects in the west of the country.

Uniper will oversee the development and financial aspects of the projects.

The initiative is part of Uniper's broader strategy to transform the energy industry towards more sustainable practices.

Uniper Renewables CEO Jörg Lennertz stated: “Poland is experiencing rapid growth in renewable energy generation and is one of our core markets to develop renewables. As part of our strategic vision, our Uniper team in Poland, together with local partners, is expanding the pipeline in wind and photovoltaic in the Polish market to gigawatt scale.

“Next to co-development partnerships, we are expanding our own origination and greenfield development capacities.”

The company is committed to investing €8bn in green growth and transformation from 2023 to 2030.

These investments will focus on solar and wind power plants, with significant expansion planned.

By 2030, Uniper aims to generate more than 80% of its electricity from CO₂-free sources.

Its plans include developing 10GW of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic plants across key European markets such as Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Sweden, Hungary and Poland, bringing them to construction readiness by 2030.

Uniper is targeting 3GW of renewable energy projects to reach investment maturity by 2026.

In early 2023 French utility Veolia agreed to acquire a 430MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Hungary from Uniper.
