Sungrow has commenced construction of the Templers Battery project, a 138MW/330 megawatt hours energy storage installation in the town of Templers, 60km north of Adelaide in the state of South Australia.

The Templers project is both the second-largest energy storage facility in the state and the second-largest stand-alone battery energy storage system (BESS) in the country.

The groundbreaking ceremony saw participation from Sungrow and its project partners, including ZEN Energy and China Energy Engineering Group Shanxi Electric Power Construction (SEPC).

The Australian Energy Market Operator granted grid connection approval to the project in early 2023.

The project received approval within 13 months of the initial application submission.

The Templers Battery project is expected to commence commercial operations by 2025.

At the core of the Templers project is Sungrow's liquid-cooled battery technology, which bolsters grid reliability by addressing intermittency and stabilising the power supply.

The deployment of the PowerTitan energy storage system, customised for the Australian market and regulatory requirements, is a key feature of the project.

The system is not only pivotal for grid stability but also contributes to carbon dioxide reduction efforts, supporting South Australia's commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Sungrow APAC vice-president Joe Zhou stated: “We are thrilled to commence the Templers project, a testament to our commitment to advancing energy storage solutions in Australia. Our collaboration with ZEN Energy and SEPC underscores the potential of innovative technology in driving sustainable energy goals.”

ZEN Energy CEO Anthony Garnau stated: “The Templers battery is a key milestone in ZEN's significant growth and marks our first 100% owned major asset, in the state where we started.”

“ZEN's partnership with Sungrow and Shanxi Electric to deliver the Templers Battery will deliver far-reaching benefits through stabilising the supply of renewable, affordable energy into South Australia.”

In May 2024 the New South Wales government launched a tender for long-duration energy storage projects.

The initiative seeks to procure 1GW of eight-hour storage capacity, as part of the state's strategy to shift towards renewable energy while maintaining a dependable and cost-effective energy supply.

The tender aims to facilitate the integration of solar and wind energy into the grid by providing storage solutions capable of delivering electricity on demand.
