Norwegian renewable energy producer Statkraft’s Brazilian unit Statkraft Energias Renováveis (SKER) has reached a deal to buy two operational wind complexes in Brazil from EDP Renováveis (EDPR).

The two wind complexes, Jerusalém and Boqueirão, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, have a total of 62 turbines and a combined power generating capacity of 260MW.

SKER currently operates 19 renewable power projects in the country with a total capacity of 450MW, along with 600MW of wind projects under construction in Bahia.

Statkraft’s portfolio in the country, including projects under development, will now exceed 1.3GW of installed capacity.

The deal will bolster Statkraft's position as a global renewable energy leader.

Statkraft Brazil CEO and president Fernando De Lapuerta stated: “Brazil is an important country for Statkraft Group’s growth, combining greenfield development of renewable technologies and acquisitions. This transaction is another significant step to the continuity of our investment plan.”

The deal is anticipated to close in the autumn of 2023.

Construction of the Jerusalém I-VI wind complex began in January 2021. With an installed capacity of 180.6MW, it comprises six smaller wind farms and is located in the municipalities of Lajes and Pedra Preta.

The Boqueirão I-II wind complex has two wind farms with 79MW of installed capacity. Construction on the project began in June 2021.

Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Policy 2023 Analysis

Countries in the APAC region should look to invest on upgrading grid infrastructure, energy storage systems, microgrids, and support mechanism for renewables to be able to achieve their climate goals. The growth trajectory of Europe cannot be implied in APAC since several countries were late entrants into the renewable market. APAC countries should look to weave their own roadmap towards achieving net zero emissions and leverage the large population into adopting renewable technology.
