German utility RWE has reached an agreement with Nordex for the latter to supply wind turbines totalling 800MW of capacity. 

Financial details were not disclosed by the parties. The contract was signed at the WindEurope conference in Bilbao, Spain, in March.

Up to mid-2026, RWE will procure 120 wind turbines from Nordex, with whom it already operates 53 wind farms across seven countries.

The new turbines are earmarked for deployment in RWE's core European markets.

The primary model to be supplied under the agreement is the N163 turbine, known for its flexible rated output, which can reach up to 6.8MW.

The contract also includes options for the N175 and N149 models with generating capacities of 6.8MW and 5.9MW, respectively.

RWE Renewables Europe & Australia CEO Katja Wünschel stated: “We have announced that we will accelerate our expansion even further. By 2030, we want to increase our installed capacity in the onshore wind sector from the current 8.6GW to 14GW.

“To strengthen our supply chain, we are planning for the long term and relying on strong partners. This supply agreement with Nordex optimally complements existing contracts and secures additional capacity for us to achieve our ambitious growth targets.”

Nordex Group CEO José Luis Blanco stated: “We look forward to further expanding our cooperation with RWE. Not only have we shared many successful projects with RWE in the past, but we also share the vision of intensively driving forward the energy transition and thus making a joint contribution to Europe’s energy security.”

The two companies have also committed to a multi-year service agreement encompassing the maintenance and servicing of the onshore wind farms.

United Arab Emirates-based renewable energy company Masdar previously finalised the purchase of a 49% stake in the Dogger Bank South offshore wind projects in the UK from RWE.

The transaction, announced at COP28 in Dubai in December 2023, leaves RWE with a majority 51% share in the ventures.
