German energy company RWE is celebrating the inauguration of its new onshore wind farm in the Aisne department of Hauts-de-France, located in the municipalities of Nouvion-et-Catillon and Nouvion-le-Comte.

The wind farm features 11 turbines, each with a capacity of 4MW, making up a total capacity of 44MW. According to a press statement released by RWE, the wind farm will meet the annual electricity needs of around 19,000 households.

The N149 turbines, produced by Nordex and standing at a height of 179.5m, are the first of their kind to be installed in France.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said: “The inauguration of the Nouvions wind farm reflects RWE’s commitment in France to continue developing the green portfolio acquired in 2020, while accelerating the deployment of new solar and wind projects throughout the country.”

“The Nouvions wind farm, RWE’s most powerful onshore wind farm in operation in France, is the result of a successful collaboration with our local partners, and a future extension is already in the pipeline.”

The Nouvions wind farm is RWE’s sixth wind farm in the region, increasing the company’s total operational capacity there to 126MW. According to RWE, it has taken on an active role in northern France after acquiring numerous projects in the region and opening a local branch in Lille last year.

In recent months, the group has also multiplied the number of secured projects, reaching 211MW, and is currently developing more than 400MW of wind power projects at various stages in its five regional divisions.

Last month, RWE Clean Energy, a subsidiary of RWE, expanded its operations in the US with the acquisition of a 599MW portfolio of three solar and battery storage system projects. The move has expanded RWE’s renewable energy presence in Idaho, Washington State and New York.
