Russian forces have struck the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, with artillery rockets, on Sunday morning, 5 May.

The attack involved five missiles that caused damage to several facilities within the plant.  There have been no confirmed injuries, nor has the scope of the damage been disclosed.

Mykolaivka City Military Administration deputy head Volodymyr Proskunin informed Suspilne news that the Russian military used a 300 mm multiple rocket launcher to deploy the rounds, including four with cluster munitions.

The operational status of the power plant, which has a capacity of 830MW, remains uncertain following the attack.

Mykolaivka, situated in northern Donetsk Oblast, has been facing regular Russian bombardments.

The wider Ukrainian energy system has suffered extensive damage from drone and missile attacks, with losses exceeding $1bn, Reuters has reported, quoting Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galushchenko.

The damage has primarily affected thermal and hydro generation facilities, as well as power transmission systems.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukraine requires 25 Patriot air defense systems to shield the nation from such attacks.

Late last month, Russia targeted Ukraine's power infrastructure, including four thermal power plants operated by DTEK, causing significant damage.

Officials reported that 34 missiles were launched overnight on Saturday 27 April, targeting four thermal power plants owned by Ukraine-based energy company DTEK.

This marked the fourth major attack on DTEK's facilities within a single month which were mainly aimed at disrupting energy supplies to millions of Ukrainians.

DTEK executive director Dmytro Sakharuk reported that Russian troops have attacked Ukraine's thermal power plants nearly 180 times since the onset of the invasion in 2022.

In the same month, the Trypilska thermal power plant, Ukraine's largest power-generating facility in the Kyiv region, was destroyed by Russian forces.

The assault saw the launch of a barrage of 82 missiles and drones, including six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles.
