Prysmian secures submarine cable projects in France

The cable links will connect two offshore wind farms, Fos and Narbonnaise, to the French transmission grid.

Energy and telecom cable manufacturer Prysmian has entered a framework agreement with Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), France's transmission system operator, for submarine power cable links.

The links will connect two offshore wind farms, the Fos project and the Narbonnaise project, to the French transmission grid.

The agreement encompasses engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCI) and includes both submarine and land segments.

The projects, crucial for France's renewable energy infrastructure, are subject to call-off by RTE and finalisation of the EPCI contracts, anticipated between 2026 and 2027.

The delivery and commissioning of the projects are set for between 2031 and 2032, and have a combined potential value of €700m ($735.5m).

Each project will feature three high voltage alternating current (HVAC) 225kV three-core export cables with XLPE insulation and synthetic armour.

The land cables, totalling 400km, will be manufactured in Gron, France. The submarine cables, 240km in length, will be produced at Prysmian's centres of excellence in Arco Felice, Italy and Pikkala, Finland - a total production of 640km of cables.

The Fos project, situated on the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur coast, will utilise 300km of cables, while the Narbonnaise, off the coast of Occitanie, will require 340km.

Each project will provide 750MW capacity.

The initiatives are pivotal to RTE's strategy to enhance the national power grid in order to integrate new low-carbon energy sources.

Prysmian has completed several interconnection projects across Europe with RTE. The company's involvement in the French offshore wind sector is reaffirmed by this development, following projects such as Fécamp, Calvados and Saint Nazaire, and ongoing work at Noirmoutier.

In November 2024, Prysmian entered a collaboration agreement with TechnipFMC to enhance the development of floating offshore wind energy.
