US-based renewables developer Primergy Solar has entered a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with San Diego Community Power (SDCP) to supply the full capacity of its 400MW solar and 1.6GWh battery energy storage facility, the Purple Sage Energy Centre, in Nevada.

The PPA will come into effect with the project's scheduled delivery in 2027.

SDCP serves one million customers and is California’s second-largest community choice aggregator.

The Purple Sage Energy Centre project is located between Las Vegas and the California border.

The project will produce 1.2 million megawatt-hours of carbon-free solar energy each year, supplying electricity to 100,000 homes annually.

The company is collaborating with the Bureau of Land Management to establish new standards for the project’s siting, design and construction.

Primergy CEO Ty Daul stated: “Signing a PPA with SDCP marks a significant milestone in the development of the Purple Sage Energy Centre. Pairing solar with sizable battery energy storage systems is vital for grid stability and creating a reliable, dispatchable energy resource.

“We are proud of the lasting partnerships we have made through this project and look forward to delivering carbon-free energy to the power grid.”

SDCP CEO Karin Burns stated: “The Purple Sage Energy Centre directly supports San Diego Community Power’s mission to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy to our customers.

“This agreement with Primergy reinforces our commitments to meet our ambitious renewable goals, while investing in a project that balances environmental and community benefits in support of the clean energy transition.”

The project will also contribute to the local economy, generating $90m in local tax revenue over its lifetime.

In November 2023, Primergy Solar secured $300m in debt finance and tax equity investment for the Prairie Mist solar project in Arkansas.

The project in Ashley County represents the initial phase of a larger 300MW project to be constructed in stages through to 2026.
