Swedish firm OX2 buys 1GW onshore wind project in Australia

The acquisition supports OX2's strategy to enhance its renewable energy portfolio in Australia.

Renewable energy sources developer OX2 has acquired its first onshore wind project in Western Australia with a planned installed capacity of 1GW.

The project, located north of Perth, is in early-stage development and will feature a 100MW battery energy storage system.

The wind project involves collaboration with 20 landowners and will benefit from the expertise of the original project developers, who will continue to oversee the approval process alongside OX2.

This acquisition aligns with OX2's strategy to diversify and strengthen its renewable energy portfolio in the region.

OX2 Australia country manager Rachel Watson stated: “This is a great achievement by our team in Australia. It fulfills the promise made when OX2 entered Australia, that the company would expand into onshore wind.

“We look forward to realising this project, which is our first in Western Australia. Australia is on the road to decarbonisation and has great opportunities to leverage its natural resources with excellent conditions for wind and solar power.”

In September 2024 OX2 agreed to sell a 119 megawatts alternating current solar farm in Victoria, Australia to an undisclosed buyer.

The company has agreed to manage the construction process on behalf of the new owner.

OX2 will handle the technical and commercial management of the solar project through a five-year management agreement.

The solar farm is expected to generate 242 gigawatt hours of clean energy annually, enough to supply power to 51,000 households in Australia. The project is expected to become operational by 2027.
