Danish energy company Ørsted has partnered with Mission Clean Energy to develop four standalone battery energy storage systems with 1GW capacity across the US Midwest.

The collaboration marks Ørsted’s entry into standalone battery storage in the US and globally, enhancing its renewable energy portfolio.

The Danish energy company will deploy its capital to secure and sustain priority positions in the interconnection queue for its storage projects. Meanwhile, Mission Clean Energy will maintain its leadership role in driving the development of these initiatives.

Both companies have submitted interconnection applications for the projects within the Mid-Continent Independent System Operator (MISO) Central and North regions.

Mission Clean Energy chief executive Max Bakker stated: “The partnership with Ørsted marks a significant milestone for Mission Clean Energy.

“Ørsted is an ideal partner to complement our development capabilities with their balance sheet strength and sponsorship support. Our combined expertise and resources will accelerate these projects and deliver impactful clean energy solutions in the MISO region.”

Ørsted noted that this agreement provides access to assets, contributing to its development pipeline.

The company's strategic focus is on increasing storage capabilities alongside wind and solar to offer integrated solutions for its customers.

Ørsted added that the partnership complements its existing development efforts while broadening and diversifying the portfolio of technologies it can offer to utilities and other customers.

The Danish energy company also has the option to acquire an ownership stake in the projects as they mature.

Ørsted's commitment to expanding storage capacity extends beyond the Midwest, as the company explores opportunities across the country.

The partnership builds on Ørsted's existing portfolio: a 40MW storage project at the Permian Solar Center in West Texas and a 300MW/1200 megawatt hours storage project at the Eleven Mile Solar Center in Arizona.

Ørsted chief commercial officer James Giamarino stated: “We look forward to working with Mission Clean Energy under this unique partnership to accelerate the expansion of storage projects across the Midwest and broadening our portfolio of renewable energy technologies and services for customers.

“Continuing to invest in and build out storage solutions is critical for ensuring a resilient and reliable grid, and this partnership with Mission advances this important goal.”

In May 2024, Ørsted engaged ABL, a consultancy specialising in energy and marine services, to provide marine warranty services for the offshore transport and installation of wind turbines and cables at the 920MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms in Taiwan.
