Polish oil and gas company Orlen has agreed to acquire two wind farms in Poland with a total capacity of 60MW from a subsidiary of Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust.

The two wind farms, in the provinces of Poznań and Szczecin, will bring the total renewable capacity of Orlen to 1GW.

Their operations began in 2023 and they generate enough clean energy to power 100,000 Polish households.

The Kuślin wind farm, located in Poznań near the town of Nowy Tomyśl, has a capacity of 40MW. This project began operations in December 2023 and is powered by 12 Vestas turbines, each with 3.3MW of capacity.

The second wind farm, Krzęcin, is in the province of Szczecin near Choszczno. It began operations in February 2023 and has an estimated life of 30 years. It is powered by eight Nordex turbines, each with 2.4MW of capacity – a total of 19MW.

Orlen CEO and management board president Daniel Obajtek stated: “We are effectively advancing towards strategic goals, which include having 9GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030.

“We consider and evaluate all attractive projects that appear on the market. As a result, our portfolio will soon be expanded to include two additional wind farms with a total capacity of around 60MW.

“These are modern units with great potential that will produce clean and affordable energy for the coming decades, to the benefit of the Poles and Poland’s economy, which is becoming more and more competitive thanks to our consistent investment in modern and clean energy sources.”

Orlen is also investing in the country’s first offshore wind farm, the 1.2GW Baltic Power in the Baltic Sea.

Expected to be completed in 2026, the offshore wind farm could significantly change Poland’s energy mix, generating enough clean energy to power 1.5 million households.
