OEG Renewables (OEGR) has entered a partnership with the Sojitz Machinery Corporation (SOMAC) to bolster offshore wind development in Japan.

The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding, will focus on providing pre-construction, operations and maintenance (O&M), and vessel services for offshore wind projects.

The alliance will leverage OEGR's expertise in offshore energy solutions and SOMAC's local capabilities and resources.

The Japanese offshore wind market is set to expand from its current 259.5MW to 3.5GW.

Japan has a target of achieving 10GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and between 35 and 40GW by 2040.

OEGR has established itself in Taiwan, providing integrated service solutions to major offshore wind projects.

The company's expertise includes supporting construction and O&M programmes, evidenced by its recent successful O&M programme for Taiwan's first two operational offshore substations at Ørsted’s Greater Changhua offshore wind farm.

Tokyo-based SOMAC is a key player in the industrial machinery sector. The company's operations encompass the export, import and trading of plants, equipment, materials and machinery across a range of industries.

With 400 employees and a presence in six Japanese cities and nine cities globally, SOMAC is a core member of the Sojitz Group.

OEG Renewables APAC regional director Kevin Wu said: “By partnering with SOMAC, a company with a deep heritage and extensive experience across multiple industrial sectors in Japan and the wider region, OEG Renewables has a strong credible strategic partner with which to grow and develop its integrated service offering in Japan's growing offshore wind sector.

“OEGR will leverage its position as the most experienced global provider of specialist subsea, topside, marine and cable services for offshore wind projects, with a deep commitment to investing in strong local teams to ensure long-term value for our regional stakeholders.”

SOMAC general manager Takahiro Morikawa said: “We [progress] to the next stage in Japan’s offshore wind market by cooperation with OEGR [which] has much experience offering a wide range of services in the offshore wind market, and also has success offering integrated solutions for OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] and wind farm developers.

“SOMAC will support and provide OEGR’s services coordinated with our Japanese resources, based on our long history especially in industrial facility and marine markets.”
