NHOA Energy, a subsidiary of NHOA Group, has successfully commissioned a 31 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system for Engie Energía Perú’s ChilcaUno thermoelectric power plant in Chilca, Peru.

NHOA Energy supplied the battery storage system on a turnkey basis and inaugurated it in September 2023.

The system has been installed to enhance the country's electricity grid stability. NHOA is consolidating its experience in retrofitting thermal power plants, which is critical in reducing carbon emissions.

The start of the project signifies NHOA and Engie’s commitment to clean and flexible energy solutions as part of the country’s infrastructure.

NHOA Energy Americas vice-president Luca Roccia stated: “We are exceptionally proud to have successfully completed this iconic project, especially considering the unprecedented challenges posed by the global macroeconomic and geopolitical environment.

“This accomplishment demonstrates our unwavering dedication to advancing clean energy solutions and showcases our resilience in delivering state-of-the-art energy storage systems.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to Engie for their formidable support and unwavering cooperation throughout the entire project construction. Their partnership was instrumental in the success of this venture.”

Engie Energía Perú is one of the country’s largest power generation companies. It operates eight plants in the regions of Lima, Moquegua, Pasco and Ancash, and has a total capacity of 2.65GW.

In July 2023, NHOA Energy was selected by Eku Energy to build two new battery storage projects in the UK with a total capacity of 130MWh.

To be located in Basildon, Essex, and Loudwater, Buckinghamshire, the two projects will provide flexibility to support the country’s electricity system while enabling more renewable energy to be added to the grid.

In a further development in Peru’s energy sector, Interconexion Electrica has unveiled plans to invest $141m (595.9bn pesos) in three power transmission lines.
