United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based renewables company Masdar and its partners Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities have signed a land access agreement with the Egyptian Government for a 10GW onshore wind project.
The $10bn (E£472.77bn) wind farm will be one of the world's largest.
The agreement grants the consortium access to a 3,025km² area in West Suhag, enabling development studies to commence.
The studies, including resource measurement, geotechnical and topographic surveys, and environmental assessments, will assess the wind farm’s potential environmental impact and inform progress towards construction.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi stated: “Masdar, its joint venture Infinity Power and our partner Hassan Allam Utilities are supporting Egypt to deliver its ambitious renewable energy targets. I congratulate Egypt’s leadership on this major milestone for the country, with what is set to be one of the largest wind farms on the planet.
“At 10GW, this landmark project is pushing the limits of innovation and scale as we work to help unlock Africa's clean energy potential, and further advance its energy transition.”
The wind farm will generate 47,790 gigawatt-hours of clean energy annually, reducing Egypt's carbon emissions by 9%.
The project aligns with the country’s goal to source 42% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030 and will save Egypt $5bn annually in natural gas costs.
Infinity Power CEO Nayer Fouad stated: “This wind farm is an ambitious and important project, set to be one of the largest in the world, and we are delighted to be taking this step forward. “This project will also show that, by setting bold targets, countries can embrace and adopt renewable energy and transform their energy mix.”
The initial agreement was signed by the consortium and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company during COP27 in 2022.
In May 2024, Masdar partnered with Bahrain’s Bapco Energies to explore the development of wind energy projects in Bahrain with a potential capacity of 2GW.
