Ireland-based renewable energy developer Mainstream Renewable Power has been selected by the Philippines Department of Energy to develop two onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 440MW.

These are the company's first fully owned wind energy service contracts in the Philippines.

Mainstream has been awarded exclusive development rights for the Santa Ana Cagayan and Panaon wind projects.

Situated in Cagayan province's municipality of Santa Ana, the Santa Ana Cagayan wind project has 100MW of capacity.

The 340MW Panaon wind project is situated on Panaon island in Leyte province.

Both are 500km from Manila, the capital city, and in the early stages of development.

Philippines Energy Secretary Raphael PM Lotilla stated: “With the Philippine economy now thriving, marked by good growth and optimistic forecasts, we are pleased with the positive response of foreign and local investors to pour in capital in our country’s renewable energy sources.

“Mainstream will be bringing in financial muscle and technological heft to work with our world-class workers throughout the construction and operational phases of all these projects, which means more employment for our people and livelihood opportunities in these areas.”

Mainstream Asia-Pacific general manager Eduardo Karlin stated: “The award of these contracts represents an important milestone for Mainstream as we continue to grow our development footprint across the Philippines.

“We are committed to the Philippine market and are well-placed to be part of the country’s energy transition and assist the government in reaching their targets of 35% renewable energy by 2030 and 50% by 2040.”

Mainstream has been active in the country since 2017 and is working in collaboration with its joint venture (JV) partner, Aboitiz Power Corporation, through its subsidiary Aboitiz Renewables.

The partnership will commence construction of the 58.5MW Camarines Sur wind farm in 2024.

Mainstream and Hexicon submitted an application to develop Dyning, a 2.5GW floating offshore wind farm in Sweden, via their JV Freja Offshore in November 2023.

To be located 45km offshore the Swedish mainland and Gotland in the Baltic Sea, the Dyning project will generate ten terawatt hours of clean energy annually.
