Turkey’s Kontrolmatik signs 1GWh energy deal with China’s Harbin

The facility is set for completion in 2025, with commissioning of the entire project anticipated by 2027.

Turkish engineering company Kontrolmatik Enerji ve Muhendislik has agreed with China's Harbin Electric to construct a 1GWh energy storage facility in Türkiye's western region.

An engineering, procurement and construction agreement was signed by Kontrolmatik's unit Progresiva Enerji Yatirimlari Ticaret, with Harbin Electric as the investor for the project in the country’s Tekirdag province.

The signing of the agreement took place in in the capital city of Ankara in the presence of Türkiye's vice-president, Cevdet Yılmaz, and the Chinese ambassador to Ankara, Liu Shaobin.

A loan of $300m (2.16bn yuan) will be provided by Harbin International to support the initiative.

The project includes the development of a wind power plant with 250MW of capacity. It will generate 875 million kilowatt-hours annually, operating at 40% capacity.

Pomega, another subsidiary of Kontrolmatik, will supply the necessary storage systems for the plant while the parent company will act as the contractor for electrical and civil works.

Kontrolmatik chairman Sami Aslanhan stated that this project will enable the country to accelerate its carbon emission-reduction efforts.

The energy storage facility is set for completion in 2025, with preliminary commissioning anticipated by 2027.

Harbin Electric, a Chinese electrical engineering company and wind turbine manufacturer, has a record of undertaking projects in Türkiye.

These include a recent €650m ($703m) investment in a cardboard factory for Modern Karton, a Turkish corrugated cardboard producer.
