JSW Energy has marked its entry into the energy storage services sector by commencing construction of a 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage project (BESS) in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan.

The BESS facility stores power generated by renewable sources such as solar and wind, to be released during peak demand periods.

It comprises two units, each with a capacity of 500 megawatt hours (MWh), capable of two hours of storage per cycle.

JSW Energy secured the project from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). It operates under a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model and will be handed over to the off-taker after 12 years.

JSW Energy joint managing director and CEO Sharad Mahendra stated: “Our BESS project represents a crucial advancement in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources."

The project's development timeline is set with an expected commissioning date by June 2025.

In March 2024, JSW Energy subsidiary JSW Neo Energy, secured a 700MW solar project from SECI.

The award was part of a larger tariff-based competitive bid to establish 1.5GW of inter-state transmission system-connected solar power projects.

The company received a letter of intent (LOI) or 300MW of grid-connected solar capacity from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam, the electricity registration board for the state of Gujerat.

The LOI is a result of a competitive bid for the development of 1.12GW of grid-connected solar power projects in Gujarat’s Khavda RE Park.

In February 2024, the company secured a 700MW solar power project from SJVN, a state-owned electricity generator in India.
