Inkia Energy approved to expand solar generation capacity in Peru

With this initiative, the company is set to become Peru's largest renewable energy producer.

Peruvian power generator Inkia Energy has received environmental approval to expand its solar power plant, Sunny, from 228MWp [megawatts peak] to 338MWp.

The expansion is a part of the company's plan to establish Peru's solar hub, which is expected to contribute approximately 1 gigawatt peak of renewable capacity to the country's national interconnected grid by the fourth quarter of 2025.

The development comes through its subsidiary Kallpa and is backed by I Squared Capital, a global infrastructure investor.

The solar project, currently under construction in southern Peru, will be fully operational by the second half of 2025.

This region is recognised as a prime solar resource hub on a global scale.

The expansion will not only enhance the output of the Sunny solar plant but also support the construction of two adjacent solar projects through energy and international renewable energy certificates off-take agreements.

In addition to solar projects, Inkia is preparing to launch two wind projects with a combined capacity of 600MW in 2026.

These initiatives, along with several other solar and battery energy storage system projects, are set to fortify Inkia's position as a frontrunner in supplying renewable energy to meet Peru's current and future demands.

Inkia's strategy is to provide a reliable power supply to its customers by integrating renewable sources with efficient natural gas capacity. This approach is crucial for addressing the intermittency and shortfalls of renewable energy.

Inkia Energy CEO Willem Van Twembeke stated: “The launch of Sunny marks the beginning of the Inkia 2.0 expansion campaign, aligned with Peru’s energy needs and securing Inkia as a leading energy solutions company in the country.

“We believe that Inkia's balanced portfolio, along with its investment grade rating, makes the company the top choice for clients in terms of reliability, both in energy and financial support.”
