Spanish energy giant Iberdrola, via its subsidiary Ailes Marines, has announced the full commissioning of the 496MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm in France.

This is the company’s second operational offshore wind project in the country and the first in the Brittany region.

The Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm is expected to produce 1.82 terawatt hours of clean energy per year, meeting 9% of the region's total electricity needs.

The project represents a significant investment of €2.4bn, entirely funded by Iberdrola. Development commenced in April 2012.

This project is the fourth offshore wind farm that the company has developed, constructed and now operates. It joins its portfolio alongside West of Duddon Sands, Wikinger and East Anglia One.

Iberdrola France director Emmanuel Rollin stated: “We are particularly proud today to announce the full commissioning of the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, twelve years after being named the winner and three years after the start of installation work.

“I would like to thank all the stakeholders in the region who have supported us over the years, as well as the teams at Iberdrola and our suppliers, who have been involved since 2012 in the realisation of this major industrial project, which is supporting the energy transition and employment in France.”

The construction and development of the Saint-Brieuc wind farm have contributed to the creation of 1,700 jobs in France, more than 500 of which are in Brittany.

The jacket foundations for the wind farm were partially constructed and assembled by Navantia Windar and the electrical components for the 62 wind turbines' masts were assembled by Haizea Breizh in the port city of Brest.

The wind turbines were produced by Siemens Gamesa at the company's new industrial site in the French port of Le Havre.

In May 2023, the first turbine at the project was installed. In October, the installation of the jacket foundations was completed.
