Hithium, a Chinese energy storage solutions provider, has supplied and installed its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery products for the China Southern Power Grid Company’s (CSG) 140 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) project in China.

Located in the city of Meizhou, Guangdong province, it is the first grid-scale, stand-alone energy storage project by the Chinese utility company to exceed 100MWh.

The facility has been designed to provide functions such as peak shaving and improved operational stability and safety for the grid. The energy storage facility has the capacity to deliver up to 81,000MWh of energy annually.

The BESS project is the world’s first to be equipped with immersion liquid-cooling technology, marking a milestone for Hithium.

Its construction took four months from start to trial.

The facility has been indicated as a demonstration project for the city, which has a population of four million. It is expected to offer higher energy security and stability.

High levels of product safety and durability were key factors in the choice of Hithium as the core supplier for the battery project.

Hithium general manager and co-founder Jason Wang stated: “Projects like this are exactly why we built Hithium’s technology and culture around customer-centricity. CSG and the province needed this project delivered quickly, safely and with a very high quality of product.

“So we set up a special service team to coordinate the entire process, from manufacturing and shipping the batteries to ensuring timely project development and the professionalism of the process.”

In June 2023, the company formed a partnership with Powin, a US energy storage company, for the supply of energy storage products.

Hithium agreed to supply 1.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery capacity with a potential for an additional 3.5GWh.
