Hitachi Energy has announced that it will supply its 380kV EconiQ gas-insulated lines (GIL) to enhance TenneT's Maasbracht substation in the Netherlands.
The upgrade will maintain the reliability of the electricity supply in Maasbracht and cut the use of sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas in the transmission network.
TenneT Netherlands grid field operations associate director Frank Wester stated: “This project is an important investment in the energy infrastructure in the region. Hitachi Energy shares our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”
The Maasbracht substation, which serves as a vital link in the energy infrastructure, connects the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
The substation has been operational for decades, and the new EconiQ GIL will modernise this crucial node, extending more than 7km and significantly contributing to TenneT's environmental objectives.
The installation of EconiQ GIL will prevent 70,000kg of SF6 from entering the transmission network.
This is equivalent to the CO₂ emissions from 826,000 cars being removed from the roads annually.
Hitachi Energy global product group switchgear head Christian Ohler stated: “We are excited to partner with TenneT on this important project.
“Our EconiQ technology is designed to meet the evolving needs of the energy sector while also minimising its environmental impact. We are confident that this project will deliver significant benefits to TenneT, the environment and society.”
TenneT, the first cross-border European transmission system operator, serves more than 43 million customers in the Netherlands and Germany.
