Spanish renewable energy company Grenergy has renewed its agreement with BYD to supply large-scale storage systems for the Oasis de Atacama solar-battery hybrid project in Chile.

The extension brings the total storage capacity of the site to 3 gigawatt hours, BYD's largest agreement to date.

BYD will provide Grenergy with its MC Cube storage systems for the 200MW Victor Jara project.

The systems will arrive at the Chilean facility in the second quarter of 2025 and commence operations in the same year.

The deal encompasses 537 containers, which equates to the storage capacity of over 9,000 electric buses and a range of more than 1.6 million km.

BYD Energy Storage general manager Yin Xiaoqiang stated: “Our partnership with Grenergy exemplifies our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability, and I am immensely proud of what we are achieving together.

“With a shared vision, we are set to redefine the landscape of energy storage and drive progress toward a greener tomorrow.”

The latest development follows the successful initial phases of the Oasis de Atacama project, which began in the first half of 2024.

The first phase has recently completed the Factory Acceptance Testing process, ensuring the batteries are functioning correctly before shipment.

Situated in northern Chile, Oasis de Atacama is recognised by Grenergy as the world's largest storage project.

75% of the project's energy output is secured through long-term power purchase agreements.

The first phase is set for connection by the end of 2024, with the majority of the subsequent phases expected to be operational by 2025.

Grenergy chief executive David Ruiz de Andrés said: “The extension of this strategic agreement with BYD marks a key milestone in our expansion plans, driving storage projects on an unprecedented scale.

“We continue to consolidate our vision of a more efficient and sustainable energy system with technology that responds to the current and future challenges of the sector.”

In July 2024, Grenergy Renovables secured a $345m green loan for the first two phases of Oasis de Atacama.
