Grenergy has entered a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL), a leading battery manufacturer, to supply batteries for the fourth phase of the Oasis de Atacama solar/storage project in Chile.

CATL will provide Grenergy with 1.25 gigawatt hours (GWh) of its EnerX model containers, which include more than 7,100 modules.

The containers are notable for their high energy storage density and safety features, particularly at the high altitude of 4,000m above sea level where the project is located.

The use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology ensures the batteries are both safe and reliable.

The Oasis de Atacama project, situated in northern Chile, has a storage capacity of 11GWh and a solar capacity of 2GW.

It is being developed with a total investment of $2.3bn and is expected to generate 5.5 terawatt hours of energy annually, contributing significantly to the region's renewable energy output.

Grenergy has already secured agreements to sell the energy produced from the first four phases of the project.

Grenergy executive chairman David Ruiz de Andrés stated: “The collaboration with CATL is a fundamental milestone to consolidate Oasis de Atacama.

“We are excited to have signed this first contract and to be working with the world’s leading battery manufacturers on a project that will make industry history.”

CATL’s energy storage solutions chief customer officer and president Tan Libin stated: “CATL remains steadfast in its commitment to accelerating a sustainable energy future worldwide.

“By collaborating with Grenergy on this pivotal project in the Chilean Atacama Desert, a region renowned for its abundant solar resources, we’re excited to empower the Chilean people with consistent and reliable access to clean electricity through our state-of-the-art energy storage solutions.”

In September 2024,  Grenergy Renovables unveiled its plan to acquire a 1GW solar portfolio in Chile for $128m, boosting the Oasis de Atacama solar-plus-storage project.
