Georgia Power has successfully connected the Vogtle nuclear expansion project's Unit 4 to the US state's power grid.

The connection of Vogtle Unit 4 to the electric grid is a critical component of the start-up testing currently under way.

Operators are now focused on incrementally increasing the reactor's power output, conducting tests at varying levels to eventually reach full power.

As the reactor's power is raised and testing progresses, the unit will move closer to commercial operation.

Completion of start-up testing will signify that Vogtle Unit 4 is ready for reliable dispatch to the grid.

Its anticipated in-service date is set for Q2 2024.

Georgia Power stated: “The new Vogtle units are an essential part of Georgia Power's commitment to delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to its 2.7 million customers.

“Each of the new units can produce enough electricity to power 500,000 homes and businesses.

“Southern Nuclear is operating the new units on behalf of the co-owners: Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power and Dalton Utilities.”

Georgia Power’s Vogtle Unit 3 began commercial operations on 31 July 2023.

It is owned by Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities.

The Vogtle Electric Generating Plant has two existing units completed in 1987 and 1989. Each generates 1.2GW of energy and the two have a combined capacity of 2.43GW.

The third unit is one of the first newly constructed nuclear plants in the US in more than three decades and will have 1.17GW of capacity.

It will generate enough power to meet the needs of 500,000 homes and businesses.
