Generac Power Systems has expanded its energy storage capabilities with the acquisition of PowerPlay's battery energy storage systems, a division of SunGrid Solutions.

PowerPlay is known for its bespoke Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) solutions for commercial and industrial projects up to 7 megawatt hours (MWh).

Post-acquisition, PowerPlay will maintain its operations in Cambridge, Canada, functioning as a dedicated research and development centre for Generac's commercial and industrial BESS solutions.

The financial details of the transaction have not been made public by either company.

SunGrid CEO Jody Snodgrass stated: “We are incredibly proud of PowerPlay and the talented team behind its success. This acquisition by Generac is a testament to the innovative spirit and dedication at SunGrid.

“Our commitment to advancing the battery energy storage industry has been instrumental in developing the PowerPlay product portfolio, and we are thrilled that Generac recognises its value and future success.

“This strategic move allows SunGrid to increase focus on our utility-scale EPC [energy performance certificate] business, driving growth and innovation.”

The acquisition will boost Generac’s presence in the commercial and industrial BESS market.

Generac president and CEO Aaron Jagdfeld stated: “This acquisition supports our commitment to offering a more complete ecosystem of products and solutions to domestic commercial and industrial customers, empowering them to achieve their energy objectives with a strong emphasis on resilience, efficiency and sustainability.”

SunGrid Solutions will continue providing energy storage EPC services in the US and Canada, focusing on larger projects ranging from 10MWh to 1GWh.
