CS Energy has awarded GE Vernova's Gas Power business a contract to supply aeroderivative gas turbines for a hydrogen-ready power plant in Queensland, Australia.

Located in the Western Downs region, west of Brisbane, the Brigalow Peaking power plant will generate 400MW of energy.

GE Vernova will supply its LM2500XPRESS aeroderivative gas turbines.

The power plant can run on 35% green hydrogen by volume to begin with. During its first ten years of operation, it will switch to run entirely on hydrogen.

Due to become operational by 2026, the Brigalow Peaking power plant will produce enough electricity to meet the demands of 150,000 houses in Queensland.

The plant will be located at the Kogan Clean Energy Hub, currently under development by CS Energy.

The hub will include the Kogan renewable hydrogen demonstration plant, which will supply the initial green hydrogen for the power station.

GE Vernova gas power business CEO Eric Gray stated: “The path towards decarbonisation requires the deploying of renewable and gas power in tandem.

"We are continuing to advance our gas power technologies towards near zero-carbon power generation and part of this evolution involves the use of emissions-friendly hydrogen in GE Vernova’s gas turbines.

“We are proud to collaborate with CS Energy on this project, which is a major step for Queensland’s renewable energy future.”

In December 2023, GE Vernova began switching the turbines running on liquid fuel to natural gas at the Saudi Electricity Company’s Power Plant 10 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The switch to natural gas will help the country reduce its carbon footprint.
