GE Vernova has signed five deals for onshore wind projects in Spain, all of which will use the company’s 6.1MW turbines with 158m rotors.

GE Vernova will supply and commission 16 of its turbines to two wind farms in Castilla León. Eight turbines will go to the Casa Vieja wind farm and eight to the Pedrejones wind farm. Deliveries are expected to start at the end of 2024.

The company will also upgrade the Les Colladetes wind farm in Catalonia for Enervent with the installation of eight turbines.

Finally, the Barranco del Agua windfarm in Andalucia will receive five turbines under GE Vernova’s deal with Greenvolt.

GE Vernova chief commercial officer for international onshore wind Gilan Sabatier commented: "We are honoured to bring more wind power online in Spain, supporting our customers’ efforts to drive the acceleration of the energy transition.”

The company has more than 4.3GW in Spanish operations, an engineering centre of excellence in Barcelona and two wind turbine blade production factories in the country.

In May, GE Vernova secured a €700m ($760.8m) contract to supply turbines for the 760MW Teruel wind project in eastern Spain.

The company’s global onshore wind business has a total installed base of approximately 56,000 turbines and nearly 120GW of installed capacity.

According to the Spanish Wind Energy Association, wind energy was the country’s foremost source of electricity generation in 2023, exceeding 24% demand coverage with more than 22,000 turbines generating more than 61,000 gigawatt-hours.

Spain's National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) has set a target to install more than 50GW of wind power by 2030. The country has the second-largest installed wind capacity in Europe behind Germany.

Power Technology’s parent company, GlobalData, forecasts that Spain’s wind power market will achieve a compound annual growth rate of more than 6% by 2035.
