GE Vernova has secured a contract from Yangtze Power to upgrade the 6.4GW Xiangjiaba hydropower plant in China.

GE Vernova will design, manufacture, deliver, install and commission three sets of main shaft air supply pipes.

The upgrade is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024.

The project is expected to improve the sealing effect, maintaining the efficiency of the hydropower plant.

Located on the Jinsha River, Xiangjiaba hydropower plant is one of the largest such facilities in the country.

Since its commissioning in 2014, the project has met the electricity requirements of five million people annually.

GE Vernova hydro power services leader Roberta Galli stated: "This project builds on GE’s and Yangtze Power’s long-lasting relationship to unleash the potential of hydropower in China. From pumped storage to services, China still has a huge potential to integrate more renewable and reliable energy into the grid and accelerate the energy transition in the country and beyond."

In June 2023, GE Vernova was awarded a contract by Hafslund Eco to service the 840MW Aurland 1 hydropower plant in Norway.

The company will deliver new rotor poles for three 280MW/30-megavolt ampere water-cooled generators located at Aurland 1. It will assemble the poles at its Norwegian services workshop in Lier.

GE Vernova will complete the project between the summer of 2025 and 2027.

ESG 2.0 will be less forgiving of poor ESG performers, especially on environmental issues

While ESG 1.0 was driven by voluntary corporate action, ESG 2.0 is being driven by a new wave of government policies. A host of new environmental laws are in the pipeline, relating to mandatory reporting, carbon pricing, and carbon import tariffs, as well as more state support and investment in clean energy technologies. Companies unprepared for ESG 2.0 face higher costs and lost sales.
