Dutch surveyor Fugro has secured a contract for site characterisation for a wind farm development offshore Murakami and Tainai, Japan.

The project, which will be developed by a consortium of RWE, Mitsui and Osaka Gas, will leverage Fugro's specialised geo-data services.

The geo-data provided by Fugro will be integral to the detailed design of the wind farm's turbine foundations and cable routes. This information is crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and operational efficiency of the wind turbines.

Fieldwork for the project is being conducted from its jack-up platform, Amberjack, and two of its vessels, Equator and Mariner.

These vessels are outfitted with Fugro's proprietary geophysical, geotechnical and positioning systems.

Fugro regional sales director Jerry Paisley stated: “Fugro has been established in Japan for more than 30 years, and RWE is a key global client of ours.

“So we’re pleased that RWE, Mitsui & Co and Osaka Gas have chosen us to deliver this important Japanese wind farm project, which will contribute to the country’s commitment to expand offshore wind capacity as part of its goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.”

In March 2024, Fugro extended its collaboration with PTSC Geos & Subsea Services (G&S) to offer site characterisation services for Vietnam's offshore wind sector.

In the two-year extension of their MoU, Fugro will deliver geophysical, geotechnical and metocean data services in the country.

Vietnam's government aims to achieve 6GW of offshore wind power by 2030 and between 70GW and 91.5GW by 2050.
