European Energy has secured grid connection approvals for 500MW of solar and wind energy projects in Romania.

This milestone moves the company's projects closer to the construction phase and represents a crucial advancement in its renewable energy initiatives within the country.

European Energy executive vice-president and project development head Thorvald Spanggaard stated: “Securing 500MW of grid connection approvals is a step towards achieving a leading position in the market.

“Romania can foster a new progressive stream of renewable energy development under the recently launched support scheme for contracts for difference.”

The company's total development pipeline in Romania now surpasses 1.5GW of solar and wind projects.

European Energy is working to obtain grid connection approvals for the remaining projects, aiming to transition them to the ready-to-build stage.

The growth of renewable energy in Romania is a key component of the nation's Green Transition, offering cleaner, more affordable electricity for consumers.

It also provides economic opportunities for stakeholders including farmers, landowners, local businesses and communities, by generating increased tax revenue and creating new jobs in sustainable investments.

European Energy envisions that hybrid projects, which combine solar, wind, and battery storage technologies, will pivotal in driving Romania's renewable energy development forward.

The establishment of clear regulations for guarantees of origin will encourage corporate power purchase agreements within the country, further stimulating the renewable energy sector.

European Energy Romania office head Ioannis Kalapodas stated: “We consider Romania a very promising market.

“The upcoming auction for contract for difference outlined in the Romanian renewable energy support scheme, totalling five GW, will unlock the implementation of more wind and solar projects.”
