Emeren Group, a US renewables developer, has entered into a co-development agreement with Nuveen Infrastructure, formerly known as Glennmont Partners, to establish a battery storage portfolio in Italy.

The collaboration aims to develop 199MW, or up to 1.59 gigawatt-hours (GWh), of battery storage capacity across two southern Italian regions.

This partnership is the culmination of their joint efforts, bringing the total power capacity to 354MW, or up to 2.83GWh.

The partnership will see Nuveen and Emeren jointly develop two additional stand-alone battery storage projects in the Apulia region.

These projects are on track to commence construction in mid-2025 and are expected to become operational in early 2026.

Emeren Group CEO Yumin Liu said: “It has been a pleasure partnering with Nuveen Infrastructure in developing battery storage projects in southern Italy totalling 354MWp [MW peak] capacity of projects.

“This agreement demonstrates the recognition of our capability to develop and build projects to the highest standards, partnering with one of the world's largest fund managers investing in clean energy.

“Italy is one of Emeren's fastest-growing markets in Europe, with a total solar project pipeline exceeding 750MWp and a storage pipeline exceeding 17.1GWh.”

Nuveen Infrastructure clean energy investments global head Francesco Cacciabue said: “It has been fantastic to work on this project with Emeren, which stands to significantly boost southern Italy's battery storage capacity.

“As the clean energy transition continues at pace in Apulia and in Europe more widely, projects such as these will be critical to adding flexibility to the renewables sector whilst providing clear and consistent returns for investors.”

Last month, Emeren signed a co-development agreement with Glennmont Partners, focusing on advancing 155MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Italy.

This agreement is part of a broader initiative to establish two independent battery storage projects in the Campania region of southern Italy.

Together, the two companies will construct a portfolio of projects in both Campania and Puglia.
