EDF agrees to buy green energy from Scottish wind farm

The facility will deliver nearly 630GWh of green energy annually and is expected to come online in 2025.

French energy company EDF has signed a seven-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Brockwell Energy to buy all the energy from its 220.5MW North Kyle wind farm.

Located in East Ayrshire, Scotland, the wind farm is being developed on and around a former coal mining site. It is set to come online in early 2025.

The wind farm will deliver 630GWh of green energy annually, sufficient to meet the power requirements of 217,000 homes.

The project will also support the Scottish government’s renewable energy targets.

EDF PPA head Tom Abbott stated: “It's great to be definitively helping Britain achieve net zero through this PPA agreement, which will bring new renewables onto our grid via this new onshore wind farm in Scotland.

“We are delighted to be offtaking 100% of the renewable wind power from North Kyle, demonstrating EDF’s expertise in offering all types of PPA. Particularly in this case with a project that received a CfD [contract for difference], and our commitment to supporting new renewable projects.”

Brockwell Energy also secured a CfD for the project in allocation round 4.

North Kyle wind farm facility is Brockwell Energy’s largest project in the UK.

Brockwell Energy commercial manager David Surtees stated: “EDF has been a great counterparty to deal with. We set ourselves tight deadlines for closing the project and the EDF team was supportive and responsive throughout the process.

“EDF’s deep expertise in structuring PPAs for renewable projects helped us to quickly get an optimal solution that addressed the needs of equity and debt providers."

ESG 2.0 will be less forgiving of poor ESG performers, especially on environmental issues

While ESG 1.0 was driven by voluntary corporate action, ESG 2.0 is being driven by a new wave of government policies. A host of new environmental laws are in the pipeline, relating to mandatory reporting, carbon pricing, and carbon import tariffs, as well as more state support and investment in clean energy technologies. Companies unprepared for ESG 2.0 face higher costs and lost sales.
