D E Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI), in partnership with El Paso Electric (EPE), has commenced the construction of the 130MWac [megawatt alternating current] Carne solar and storage project in Deming, New Mexico, US.
The Carne project is DESRI's second venture in Luna County, following the successful launch of the Alta Luna solar facility in 2017.
The new development will bolster the supply of sustainable power in the southwestern US, contributing to EPE's objective of achieving an 80% clean energy portfolio by 2035 and reaching 100% by 2045.
Under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with EPE, the Carne solar and storage project will begin commercial operations by 2025.
EPE regulatory operations and resource strategy vice-president James Schichtl stated: “EPE is excited to join DESRI in bringing this latest renewable generation addition to New Mexico, and to continue to build upon our great working relationship.”
The solar facility is expected to generate sufficient clean energy to power an estimated 37,600 homes annually, utilising standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency to gauge its impact.
The initial development stages of the project saw the involvement of Galehead Development and Lacuna Sustainable Investments.
SOLV Energy has been appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project and will continue to provide maintenance and operational services post-completion.
DESRI chief development officer Hy Martin stated: “DESRI is pleased to continue our investment in the energy transition in New Mexico with our fourth utility-scale renewable energy facility in the state, and to build on our long-standing relationship with EPE.
“Carne will provide reliable, cost-effective clean power to EPE, as well as transmission grid support with the planned large battery storage facility. In addition, the project will support the local community with economic development opportunities for years to come.
