Norwegian offshore wind developer Deep Wind Offshore and Swedish power distribution company Ellevio have formed a long-term partnership to facilitate the connection of offshore wind power to the Swedish grid.

The collaboration centres on the Olof Skötkonung offshore wind farm, 53km northeast of the city of Gävle in the Gulf of Bothnia, and will feature 70 wind turbines.

The turbines could generate 7.5 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity per year.

Deep Wind Offshore CEO Knut Vassbotn stated: “We see that Olof Skötkonung will play an important role in the energy transition as early as the 2030s. If we get our permits, we can start delivering relatively quickly.

“Partnering with a leading Swedish energy company like Ellevio gives us the opportunity to accelerate the delivery of the project.”

In December 2023, Deep Wind Offshore applied for permission to construct and operate the wind farm along Sweden’s southern coast.

Deep Wind Offshore and Ellevio aim to leverage their respective expertise in offshore wind development and grid management.

The joint effort will focus on developing and operating projects that integrate onshore and offshore grid systems, fostering climate adaptation for industrial clients.

The partnership will also explore innovative delivery models for fossil-free energy to consumers, which could significantly impact climate adaptation and growth for large-scale electricity users.

For Ellevio, the project aligns with its business strategy of developing and owning networks specifically for offshore wind power, with the ambition to facilitate the connection of substantial wind energy capacities in Sweden and expedite the green transition.

Ellevio strategy and business development head Kristofer Fröjd stated: “Offshore wind power will take an increasingly larger place in the Swedish energy mix as we increase energy production, and Olof Skötkonung is a strong project we are eager to work on.

“Deep Wind Offshore, like us, has a long-term perspective on operations and ownership, which makes us a very good match.”
