Bute Energy, a renewables developer, has revealed plans for two new wind farm projects in Powys, Wales, with a total power generating capacity of 192MW.

Together, the 108MW Aberedw Energy Park and the 84MW Bryn Gilwern Energy Park will be able to power 175,000 homes.

The wind farms will be built east of Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells in Powys.

Bryn Gilwern will be built within the Welsh Government’s pre-assessed area for large-scale onshore wind energy.

The projects will be powered by 34 turbines. Maximum turbine height will be 200m at Aberedw and 220m at Bryn Gilwern.

The electricity generated from the two projects will be fed into the transmission network through the proposed Green GEN Cymru Towy Usk green energy network.

The network will be constructed by Green GEN Cymru, part of the Bute Energy Group.

Bute will ensure that as much investment as possible will remain local.

The contracts awarded by the company during the development and construction stages will also ensure that partners commit to a Social Value Standard, creating jobs that benefit local communities.

Aberedw and Bryn Gilwern wind farms will also further the Welsh Government’s 2035 goal of 100% renewable electricity production.

The developer is currently conducting public consultation with the local community. The consultation began on 8 November 2023 and will run until 20 December.

Feedback will be factored in, along with environmental, technical and ecological surveys.

Bute Energy senior project manager James Nicol stated: “We are pleased to be launching the proposed Aberedw and Bryn Gilwern Energy Parks. Together they respond to the climate emergency, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and support the Welsh Government’s target for electricity to be 100% renewable by 2035.

“There is endless potential for renewable energy in Wales – particularly from the wind that blows across our hills and mountains. Bute Energy is taking action now to help deliver this clean, green energy to our homes and businesses.”
