India’s Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for a new 2x800MW supercritical thermal power project in Jharkhand's Koderma district.

This project marks the first 800MW venture for DVC and will be adjacent to the existing 2x500MW units, also installed by BHEL.

The contract was secured through international competitive bidding.

BHEL's partnership with DVC is longstanding, with more than 80% of the utility's coal-based power stations in Jharkhand and West Bengal installed by BHEL.

BHEL will be responsible for the supply, erection and commissioning of the power plant, including the associated civil works.

The key equipment will be sourced from BHEL's manufacturing units in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Ranipet and Trichy.

On-site execution will be managed by BHEL's Power Sector - Eastern Region division.

The project will also feature advanced equipment for emission control, aligning with the latest environmental standards.

By securing this contract, BHEL continues to play a pivotal role in enhancing India's energy security and supporting the nation's goal of self-reliance in the power sector.

The company has an installed base of more than 168GW of thermal power plants across the country.

In June 2024, BHEL received orders valued at Rs70bn ($837m) from Adani Power for the construction of two thermal power plants in India.

The state-owned enterprise is responsible for handling the manufacture, supply and commissioning of the primary plant equipment for both projects.

The first order is for the 2x800MW Raipur supercritical thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh, awarded by Adani Power.

The second order, from MTEUPPL — a subsidiary of Adani Power — is for the 2x800 MW Mirzapur supercritical thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh.
