Iberdrola’s subsidiary Avangrid has completed the installation of an offshore substation at its 806MW Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm, 15 miles (24km) off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

It is one of the largest substations ever installed by the company.

The substation is a critical component in an offshore wind farm, collecting and transmitting the electricity generated and serving as an intermediary platform between the turbines installed at sea and the onshore power grid.

Its two main components, topside and jacket take the wind farm's total weight to more than 5,000 tons.

Iberdrola has previously installed five offshore substations in Europe.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra stated: “Offshore wind in the US is one step closer to becoming a reality. Our team's dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit have made this achievement possible and, by building pioneering projects like Avangrid’s Vineyard Wind 1, we remain committed to accelerating the energy transition to create a cleaner, more sustainable future in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the US.”

Vineyard Wind 1 will be powered by 62 GE’s Haliade-X turbines, each with 13MW of power-generating capacity.

Construction began in November 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2024.

The wind farm will generate enough clean energy to power 400,000 US households while reducing carbon emissions by 1.6 million tons annually.

The project will save $3.7bn in energy costs during its operational life.

It is being built by Iberdrola and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners with a total investment of $2.7bn (€2.5bn).
